Information for Hawkes Bay Furniture

For our regular viewers, you may be aware that our Uber-Kitchen will be assembled by Hawke's Bay Furniture.  Well in addition we’ve decided to ask them for a quote on building our Wall Sconces we are going to use in the house

What you see above is an example of the type of lighting we will be using in our house.  We looked at buying new in New Zealand, but the Arts and Crafts / Craftsmen / Mission style of lighting (good quality - authentic) just isn’t available in NZ.  So then we looked at importing them from the US, but after shipping and import GST tax and re-wiring them, that got too dear in cost.

So I came across this PDF build you own plan, took it our Cabinet maker, asked him to super size it from 3” in width to 5” in width (140 mm in a rational measurement system), and give us an estimate for 17 of them.  I figure there is no way that it won’t be cheaper!

Also you have seen the “pictures” of the Kitchen, but you may be interested to know “how” they will be built.  Again the plans for building them come from the US for DIY people.  The design template for the cabinets comes from an article on how to Reface your own cabinets, here is the PDF that explains how to do it

and the plans for the Island in the kitchen comes from another DIY project, here is the PDF that explains it in detail.

You may notice that the cabinet faces are a little different then the island that is more “modern”.  That is on purpose!  I want the Island to look like a “newer” addition.  I want my Kitchen to have an organic lived in feel.

Now of course, these plans are meant for the DIY person who does the majority of their work on a table saw.  Andrew has strict instruction I want them to “look” exactly like they are shown here, but HOW he builds them is up to him.  He as already looked at the legs on the Island and said, “why would you go to that much trouble to make them look like that?”.  The point being of course since he has all the good wood working tools, doing it the way described in the plans would be the “hard” way.

And to be fair, my version of the island won’t be that simple rectangle you see above, it has some real complexities to it.
